Out with the old, in with the new.
Old junky alarm system on wall

Have you been paying a monthly monitoring fee now for years with no upgrade?  Just like cell phones, computers and other technology equipment that you update every 2-3 years alarm system are no different.  So why don’t people?  The mentality is ‘if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it’.  Most users don’t know they can get a better system from their company or a new one at no cost.  Sure you may have to put up a fight to your current security company (ie., threaten to cancel) but it will all be worth it in the end.  So here are 3 signs that you need to update your home security system.

Out of Contract Alarm System

Have you been with your company for over 3 years? The average time a consumer keeps their system is 7.5 years. After your initial 2-3 year agreement your due for an upgrade. Don’t let your company get free money month after month from you. You deserve the latest and greatest or additional equipment at no cost.

Wired Alarm System

Is there a chord that runs from your motion detector all through the walls?  Is your panel the size of a cardboard box?  Heck, these days if you don’t have a touchscreen panel then you need an upgrade.  Everything should be wireless.  It’s not 2004 any more.  They can send in a tech and replace any old equipment.

Land Line System

If your 40 or older you may fall into this category.  That’s nice that you enjoy having a land line at home but time to disconnect it from your alarm system!  If a burglar cuts the phone outside (or a storm knocks it out) you will be mad you are paying for a product that doesn’t work.  They can disarm the system and walk right in to your house if they snip the wires to your land line.  You can also save $30-60 a month if you will get with the times, cancel your Land Line service and tell your security company you want a cellular module added.  If you are going to pay the monitoring fee, you might as well have a product that works.

Additional Signs That Your Alarm System is Outdated

Low Resolution Cameras

It may be challenging to understand what your home alarm system’s cameras are capturing if they create foggy images due to their low resolution. Your alarm system is essentially useless if it can’t produce clear and identifiable pictures. It’s time to switch to a high resolution camera. Today’s market is plenty of excellent cameras with greater megapixel counts that can provide you vision that is incredibly clearer, sharper, with actual color, and with detailed information.

No Remote Control Capabilities

Modern security alarm systems have several improvements, including the ability to control and monitor your cameras remotely via a mobile app. Whether you are at work or grocery stores, you can see who enters and leaves your house with the app.

No Available Two Way Audio

f any Bulgar enters your home, a two-way audio feature will be able to provide a voice warning to threaten them right away. It also makes it possible to communicate with people who are at your door, such as the delivery man or your neighbor, even if you are distant from your house.

Old dcs security panelsConclusion

So if you are like the majority of America, it is time to update your security system.  You can find great deals and promotions and companies will come and completely replace the old one.  If you don’t update, you risk:

  • Being broken into
  • paying them a monthly for no real reason (free money to the company)
  • missing out on home automation and touchscreen panels

So make sure you have keyfobs, mobile control etc.  If not, read the reviews of our home alarm companies reviewed and decide who to go with from there!

What happens when the two largest home security companies collide?

We stacked up these two security giants dozens of ways for you to decide who the right company is for you and your home.  Ultimately what you are deciding between is a: good vs rocky history, good vs luxury price and basic vs advanced.  These are the two largest home security companies in North America with different sets of standards. It is the Vivint vs ADT security system.

Of all the home security providers in the US, the ADT Security System has set its standard as the oldest and most experience. In business for more than 150 years, they have a solid reputation and great customer service. However, even if Vivint was founded only in 1999. They also set their standards with their smart home integration and month-to-month contracts.

By the end of this comparison we want to know whose crime deterrent sign you will be putting out in your front yard…  The orange circle or the blue octagon?

**Update to Vivint** They have now changed to a Leasing fee option for equipment as of Feb 13, 2017.  This means there are no more ‘set plans’ and that users can choose to pay upfront for their security equipment (and avoid their long 5 year contracts for monitoring) or lease-to-own the cost of the equipment into the contract.  With this update, it means anyone who qualifies (600+ credit score) can get setup with a ‘no money down’ home automation security system.  This also means their promotion of $1500 Free equipment doesn’t exist as customers have to pay for the equipment.

Vivint vs ADT Monitoring Stations

ADT dots the nation with 5 corporate calling stations and dozens of monitoring stations.  Each one of these buildings are built to withstand tornadoes, earthquakes and other natural disasters.  If one of their primary monitoring locations were to go down, the calls going to that station automatically re-route to another one so you have true 24/7 monitoring service.

Vivint on the other hand has one primary monitoring station in Provo, UT.  Other recent locations include Seattle, WA.  Many saw Vivint’s CEO Todd Pederson on the TV show ‘Undercover Boss’.  He talked about opening a new monitoring location in the show as well as improving other aspects of the company.  Vivint may hire other phone centers to do after hours support and take calls for their customers but nowhere near the amount of national stations or backup structure that ADT does.

Vivint vs ADT Trial Period

We frequently conduct free trials to determine a security system’s quality and level of service. The Adt provides an incredible 6-month money-back guarantee. However, the terms and conditions of the Residential Security plan are unclear, and there are no clear details regarding the limitations and particular parameters of the said trial. While on the other hand, Vivint provides their customers with a 3-day trial period, after which they have 30 days to return the equipment if they decide to terminate their contract.

Vivint vs ADT Installation

While both Vivint and ADT provide the ease of professional installation that ranges from $99-$150, ADT also offers a DIY installation option, making it easier for the client to determine which options are suitable for them.

Alarm Reviews verdict

If you want a better all-around service, price and reputation, then choose ADT.  Your initial term is going to be shorter (36 vs 50 months) and easier to move if the need arises.  If you want the best of the best of the best and don’t mind the higher prices with worse customer ratings then choose Vivint.  Another reason to go with Vivint is if you have an existing ADT system and you want to upgrade.

Ultimately it is your choice, both are great companies and are industry leaders in the US.  Let us know what you think below!

Blind the Bad Guys with these Bright LED Security Motion Lights

We may never know all that creeps in the dark around our homes while we sleep. One way to be sure that anything wandering around is aware of you, though, is with best outdoor motion sensor lights. Nothing scares off a prowler quicker than a light that snaps on suddenly without warning in the dark of night.

Motion sensitive lights save power because they activate only when there is movement in the area. Many save even more with powerful LED lamps, as well as options to adjust the time that the light is on when activated, or even solar-powered lights to avoid using any electricity from the grid at all.

Features of the many motion lights available include coverage area, the brightness of illumination, time light stays on when activated, power needs and usage of the light, installation requirements, and type of lamp used.

Benefits of Motion Sensor Lights

1. Energy and Money Saver

Motion sensor security lights help reduce your electricity bills and conserve energy. Lights left switched on eat up power and can lead to more burnt out bulbs. After the relatively small initial costs, motion sensors get to work on saving you money.

  • Motion-sensing lights save many hours of run time every year and enhance the lifespan the super bright floodlights.

2. Excellent Crime Deterrence

Motion detection lighting helps prevent break-ins and burglaries by making the intruder visible and startling them. These lights detect movement and automatically switch on when it detects one. Motion detection lighting deters intruders from breaking into your property.

3. Provides Light to Difficult Areas

Outdoor security lights with motion sensor provide easy lighting solutions without having to search and fumble for the switch in dark areas within your home. It makes it a breeze for you and your visitors not to fall or trip over because of the motion detection lighting.

4. Very Convenient

Arriving home in the dark and then having to search for your house keys to get yourself in might be challenging. In addition to being annoying and time-consuming, this poses a security risk if it is late at night and nobody is present. You won’t have to worry about these problems once you get this type of illumination installed because it will make it possible for you to see clearly and for others to see you, preventing any nighttime attacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose an outdoor motion sensor light?

You have to think in terms of what you want and how your yard is set up. First off, think about how far away you want the light to detect movement. Then, factor in how bright you want that light to be. You’ll also need to think about the energy source from which the light will draw power.

Another major factor is durability. While, at first, you might think that having a mounted light is no big deal because you can change the lightbulb any time, do be aware that you’re purchasing this device for security reasons, so you don’t want it to malfunction at the wrong time.

Moreover, you might want a light with an auto-reset function in case of power outages. And, of course, you’ll want to be able to adjust its sensitivity. When fall comes, and the leaves start falling, you don’t want it to get triggered non-stop because of that.

How bright should a motion sensor light be?

Go with a bulb with as much lumen count as possible. You’ll usually find motion sensor light between 300 and 700 lumens. Remember that these light also have ranges, so their brightness may vary from scenario to scenario.

Are solar motion lights any good?

Solar-powered motion lights are good as long as you live in an area where they can get enough sunlight to power themselves for the night. Be aware of how much battery they have because if you live somewhere where it gets dark early during the winter, you might find yourself without a functioning light to begin with. And you don’t want that to happen exactly on the night of a potential break-in. But, as long as their battery is powerful enough, you’ll be happy to know that they are independent from the power grid, so they can offer protection in case the power goes out.

Final Review of the Best Outdoor Motion Sensor Lights

With so many different options available, the outdoor motion lights right for your home are out there for you to find.  They are the perfect addition to a home security system and a crime deterrent.  They can also help with lighting for better video capture on security cameras.

Knowing the area you need to cover and types of power needs (and installation requirements) is a good start to choosing the right light for your yard’s security.  Have any tips on beefing up home security? Leave them or other feedback on outdoor motion lights below.

Almost Out of that Sticky Security Contract?

Congratulations, you made it!  You are no longer in contract with your alarm company.  Most likely this has been three (short or long depending on their customer service) years for you to be a free agent again in the home security world.  Hopefully, there were no break-ins, and that if there was; your alarm system did what it needed to and got the police and your family called. You do not have to ask yourself “How to cancel my alarm?” anymore!

Now that the initial agreement with the company is up, you are faced with a few different:

  • Keep the current system & still pay
  • Switch to a monthly schedule
  • Consider switching to a solar-powered or battery-powered
  • Upgrade and get free new equipment by switching providers
  • Stop paying your monitoring fees & still use alarm system for deterrent and warnings

Keeping the Current System and Still Pay

Money Flying out of a window

Don’t let your money fly out the window!

This is, unfortunately, the most common option and the number 1 reason security companies make the kind of money they do!  Did you know that the average customer stays with ADT for 7 years before canceling or upgrading?  The initial ‘Free Alarm’ you got for signing up doesn’t pay for itself in the eyes of the security companies for 2-3 years.  (High overhead with equipment, paying sales rep, technician, and monitoring station).

Once those fees are recouped after 2-3 years is when they start rolling in the big bucks.  Nearly 80% of the monitoring fees are then pure profit.  What do we here at Alarm Reviews recommend?  Change it up.  Get the most out of the companies, their promotions, etc. and get new equipment and make a change.  Don’t be their favorite customer by simply sending them a bill every month while they don’t do a thing.

Do not hesitate to use the new equipment that the company offers. To create a win-win situation, seize the opportunity and make the most of it.

Upgrade your Current System for Current Promotions

new touchscreen panel offered by Protect America

Upgraded panel shown for example

Chances are, the alarm system you got 3-5 years ago has been updated and changed.  With home automation being the new biggest trend, you will want to stay on top of promotions and keep the best of the best in your home.  So what should you do?  Take initiative and get an upgraded alarm system.  Don’t settle for a ‘working’ alarm system.   You can compare different security systems, call around, and don’t be worried about changing companies.  Unless you are loyal to them because a family member owns the company, don’t be.

A new company will come in and add up to $1600 in free equipment to your previous alarm system.  This could include a free touch screen panel for you; key remotes, or covering some of the entrances or window alarm sensors that you didn’t the first time.  Chances are you didn’t have security cameras or smart thermostats when you last signed up either so now would be the time to get those for free when signing a contract with a new company.

There are many upgrade changes in the system yearly. Get them to make your home security smarter and more efficient at a more worthy price.

How Can I Cancel my Alarm Contract?

Cancel my alarm

Maybe you have been counting down the days for your contract to end because you are sick of paying the $30-50 monthly fee.  Well go ahead and call and cancel!  Just make sure you do this on the very month your contract ends.  Why?  Several companies have a horrible auto-renewal policy in their contract and if you don’t cancel before the final month of the contract (36th/60th month) it will automatically renew for another 3-5 years. Typically they are auto-renewed for 12 month period. This is, of course, something the sales rep didn’t tell you about when you signed up but do your best to stay on top of it and cancel right away.

Beware of early payoff and cancellation fees.  These are usually upwards of 75% of the remaining contract.  If you are moving to an area where the company cannot service things may get a little messy.  Depending on the company, they will either admit they can’t provide service or end terms.  If they want to get real stingy they will claim you still owe the remainder of what’s left on the agreement.  This is where lawsuits come in and neither party is happy; unfortunately, this happens quite a bit in the industry.

Your equipment will still function and sound the alarm when a sensor is triggered but the monitoring station will no longer call you.  Some people like this as it still gives them a warning (to grab the gun etc.) at night if there is a home intrusion and you save yourself the monthly monitoring fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off my house alarm without having to insert the code?

First, you need to locate the main access panel of your home’s alarm system and remove the AC power from the wall directly. Now use your console access key or a small screwdriver to unlock the backside of the alarm console panel. From there, it gets even simpler. All you need to do now is to disconnect at least one of the wires that are attached to the system’s main battery. That way, the alarm will reset and you won’t need to insert the code anymore. Do note, however, that we don’t recommend leaving your alarm without a code for long. Inspect the instruction manual for solutions related to your particular issue or call the alarm security provider directly and describe the ordeal as best as you can.

Will my home alarm work without monitoring?

Theoretically yes, most alarm systems should work without the ability to actively monitor your home. You see, if you reset your alarm system without renewing your security subscription, the alarm itself will still get triggered if it senses something wrong. However, don’t expect it to inform the security firm or the authorities. It will only work as a smartphone notification for you personally, so you need to assume this risk at your own discretion.

How long does a house alarm go off for?

Depending on the timeout settings, most modern house alarms will go off for an average of 20 minutes. However, lengths may vary for traditional systems. The alarm owner may be able to increase or decrease this average time depending on what system settings they choose when setting up the alarm system. You may also be required to manually disable the alarm in case it gets triggered by accident.

In closing

There are several options you have as a consumer when the contract runs out of time.  The last thing you want to do is to do nothing, stay quiet, and pay your bill.  Whether you cancel altogether or upgrade for a better deal, do something!

Put Your Right Hand in, Take your Right Hand Out

You can create your own zone (like the hokey-pokey circle mentioned in the headliner) of security.  Geofencing refers to marking out geographical boundaries within a location via GPS (global positioning system) or RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). With Geo fencing, when an object enters or leave a geographical location, an alert is triggered.

An ankle bracelet that sets off an alarm when its detected outside of its geographical boundary particularly used by law enforcement agencies to place a criminal under house arrest is a typical example of a device using a Geo fencing technology.  Another example is found in home automation where home automation devices carry out their programmed function like powering on or off when the Administrator’s phone is detected out of the home location.

As a result of the many possibilities, these tools can also provide advertisers their individualized messages are more relevant, engagement is higher, and their return on investment is better. Such as, with geo fencing, they can send their sales and coupons to anyone inside the range. Additionally, a geo fence can range in size from a building to a city. They even have the ability to change shape. Marketers can construct polygon-shaped geofences for more complex scenarios or circular geofences for simpler ones.

How does Geofencing work?

Geofencing App

Geo fencing works by setting a virtual boundary around a geographical location using either GPS or local radio-frequency identifiers (such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi). The Geo fence is paired with a software or hardware that is programmed to carry out a particular function when the Geo fence is triggered.

A particular useful tool in geofencing is Google Earth Technology. The Application of this technology limitless as its found use in a lot of application ranging from asset management to advertising, home automation, productivity, security etc.

End users can also create a geofence by using the geofencing features in their mobile apps. Top 9 Best Guard Dogs Breed that Will Destroy the Bad Guys

There are dozens of reasons to get the best guard dogs.  Maybe you live alone and the nights scare you.  You may have children you want safe guarded and watched over.  Maybe you don’t want to carry a gun with you everywhere but you still need that sense of security.  If you are looking to go the “old fashioned” route when it comes to all things home security, the best way to protect your home is with a furry friend.

Dogs just have a certain sense when it comes to someone (although it’s usually a bird…or the mailman..) lurking outside of your home. However, owners should be aware that there is a difference between a guard dog and an alert dog. Alert dogs will begin barking loudly to alert their owner of a home intruder or just a stranger. Guard dogs are meant to disable intruders and protect their terrain.  If you want your home to be completely protected against a robbery or burglary, all you need to do is invest in a canine companion.

Some dogs are born with the instinct to serve as guard dogs, so go for one of those if you want to protect yourself, your family, or your property. A guard dog should be big, brave, and trainable. To protect your family, it should be loyal, highly attentive, smart, and behave submissively. So, if you are considering getting a guard dog, here are 9 breeds of dogs that are typically good companions and protectors.

With that all said, let’s get into the top 9 best guard dogs that you can rely on for times of danger.

Akita:

Best Guard Dogs Akita

Known for it’s fluffy coat and it’s “husky” like appearance are the traits this beautiful guard dog is known for. Akita’s are known to be alert, loyal, and extremely doting making them the perfect addition to a family. Akita breeds are extremely intelligent which should make them even easier to train!

One of the most obedient dog breeds is the Akita. This breed takes this responsibility seriously and usually guards duties with little to no training.

Along with a unique name, the Akita is great for children and defense.  Be ready to keep up with its fur, feeding and needs for activity though!

German Shepard:

Commonly used in police force, German Shepards often develop strong bonds with their owners and will protect them to no end. The intelligent German Shepard is one of the most loyal breeds on this list, and most do not experience a “rebellious” phase. German Shepards tend to be “aloof” towards strangers invited into your home and many are absolutely fearless in almost any situation. German Shepard Dogs (GSD) could be the perfect addition to your family.

They are also well-liked pets that will guard your home against burglars and are so attentive that they will create a close bond with you. There is no need to go any further if you want a dog that you can teach to do just about anything.

Used by special forces, the German Shepard is a classic and a wise investment for security.  Image source

Boxer:

One two punch. If you’ve ever seen a boxer, you may have been intimidated by it’s stature. Known for their long legs and broad shoulders, their appearance alone may dissuade a criminal from entering your home. However, they are one of the most loyal breeds around, and their high intelligence makes them extremely easy to train. Boxer breeds are extremely good with children; making them a great family pet.

However, they have a lot of energy and require regular exercise. According to Petful.com, boxers are also more prone to certain diseases than other breeds, such as mast cell tumors, ulcerative colitis, and heart problems.

Best Guard Dogs Boxer

Cute at the start but quickly turn into a dog that burglars typically don’t dare crossing

Great Swiss Mountain Dog:

Though they aren’t the ideal dog for hot and warm climates (the heat causes them to tire easily) they are one of the best on this list when it comes to home security. Their stocky size alone is often enough to deter even the most desperate intruders. This stocky dog is great for guarding your home, but great around families as well. Great Swiss Mountain dogs (or commonly referred to as Swissies) love to cuddle on the couch!

Best Guard Dogs Great Swiss

If looks can kill then this breed is a keeper.  Some owners are turned off by the lack of power they show when it comes ‘down to the wire’ though.

Great Pyranees:

This dog was originally bread to keep sheep and other livestock safe from wolves, bears, or other predators in the wilderness. Great Pyranees are bred to keep their family members safe, and will stop at no expense to protect their “herd.” However, owners should keep in mind that these dogs were bred to be independent and training them may prove to be slightly difficult.

Best Guard Dogs Great Pyranees

Nice looking on the outside; a monster inside if you are the wrong person.  Consider it a ‘spy’ defense dog that you don’t want to cross

Doberman Pinscher:

Their muscular stature and pointy snout make this dog breed intimidating just to come upon. Dobermans are said to be relatively easy to train, but only after they have developed a bond with their owners.

It is considered the fifth smartest breed of dog in the world and is loyal to guarding its owners. It is also constantly vigilant. Additionally, Dobermans bark a lot and will respond to a threat by cornering or pinning an intruder against a wall until humans can take control. They are ideal jogging partners since they have high energy requirements.

Just writing about the Doberman makes me scared of encountering one!  Very defensive dog

Border Collie:

Looking for a good family dog?  Something that is nice, playful and helpful when it comes to securitiy?  The Border Collies are other that were bred to be herding animals, and are known for being very protective over the ones they have bonded with. Most owners will tell you that Border Collies make better alert dogs, but they are known for protecting their turf either way.

This one will act like an alarm siren, being plenty loud to any intruders so you know to take the next step.

Rottweiler:

Known for their muscular and intimidating look, Rottweiler dogs can keep many intruders away with a “bark!” or two. Rottweilers sense threats quickly, and will guard their territory. Though they make great guard dogs, they have an incredibly sweet and loving disposition around family members.

Additionally, the breed was developed to guard cattle and is descended from ancient mastiffs; it nearly went extinct in the late 1800s.

Don’t be fooled by this face, these guys are MEAN to the bad guys.

Komondor:

The last featured dog is another one bred for livestock protection. They have long, thick hair, and like to be left alone. Because these mountain dogs were bred to be left alone, they’re known for keeping your home protected while you are at work during the day. Komondor dogs are said to be reserved or regal around strangers.

Looks like a mop but can do more than clean your floors!  This dog is hard for bad guys to easily get around.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most fearless dog breed?

The German Shepard is by far the most fearless dog breed out there. They’re not just great guard dogs, they also help out our heroes in the army, police officers, and much more. Some of their practical abilities (with proper training and discipline) include sniffing out bombs, controlling crowds, sniffing drugs, and lots more things that can be used by the authorities to subdue the bad guys.

What is the most aggressive dog?

Surprinsigly, one of the most aggressive breeds is the Chihuahua. Yes, you’ve read that right. Fortunately, its small size and overall small teeth make it nearly impossible for it to hurt you too much. However, Pit Bulls are a whole ‘nother story. Those guys can rip and tear your flesh, and there are numerous reports about them mauling children. So, while a Pit Bull might make a good guard dog, it’s not an angel. It’s a fighting machine, and you don’t know when it will turn against you. That’s why we haven’t included it on this list.

What is the safest family dog?

The Labrador Retriever is by far the most calm dog breed you can buy. It’s safe around children, especially after being tamed and domesticated. With that said, you won’t have any surprises about it turning against you and ripping your flesh off, unlike an Amstaff or Pit Bull.

What is the easiest and best guard dogs to train?

All of the above breeds are pretty easy to train, but if we had to pick only one guard dog, it would be the German Shepard when it comes to the ease of training. The second one would be the Boxer due to its inherit loyalty and ability to listen to your every command. Either one will do great.

Final Thoughts

Dogs can make great additions to the family and they’re great for home security. However,  at the end of the day, one can’t deny the downright effectiveness of a home security system that won’t be bribed by a treat! Like choosing the right dog breed for your family, it can be difficult to decide which home security system is right for you.  So many different companies and small differences it’s hard to know which is the right fit and that’s what we are here to help.

After reviewing the top 9 dog breads for protecting your home, will you be getting one (or more)?  Let us know any other breads we may have missed below.

Tips for making your spouse or partner feel safe at Home

Happy WifeHappy Wife Happy Life Right?

Feeling safe at home is vital.  It helps with a better nights rest and sleep is crucial for dozens of reasons we won’t get into here.  As a Husband or partner to any lady it is your duty to make sure she feels safe at home.  Sure when you are there she has your muscles, guns and tough ego.  But the moment you leave she boards up the doors and windows anticipating zombies. For women to feel comfortable and take care of their needs without fear, they need to feel safe at home.

Here are some tips so the next time you leave for work; vacation or just to the grocery store your wife can have peace of mind that everything is going to be okay.

1. Don’t rely on guns just to feel safeBlack and silver pistol

Sure, as the man of the house you know How to use a gun.  But she doesn’t.  You may have even taken her to a shooting range once or twice and she pulled the trigger and nearly hit the target.  But do you think  in a high stress scenario such as a Home Invasion that she knows what to do and how to react?  “I have a gun” is a common defense to not getting a home alarm system but not a practical one.

It comes down to this.  Your wife or partner doesn’t want to use the gun.  Do you really think she wants to shoot a man dead in the house?  When Home Invasions happen, they are so quick and instantaneous that unless she is packing it with her there won’t be much time to run to the safe, get it out, take aim and fire.

Instead of protecting your home from intruders, the gun in your home may cause another accident if you will rely on it.

2. Invest in a home alarm system to make you home feel safeInvest in a home alarm system

Yeah, you’re a man and money matters.  But you holding back that $30-50 a month for extra beer is causing your wife to have bad dreams and not feel safe without you home.  You would be impressed what a security system can do.  Even though it doesn’t stop someone from breaking in, it increases prevention dramatically.  Just by the signs and stickers alone will make someone think twice before doing it.

Best of all?  When you are at work or gone you know what is going on at your house too.  If the alarm goes off, you are alerted right away and can zoom on home, have the police called and take care of priorities.

Security monitoring software allows you to immediately watch your children on your phone. So it’s not just for security but also monitoring. If you miss your family or need to check in on them, you can do this as well.

Is it really an investment? Sure it is!  If it helps her sleep well at night, keeps an eye on the two most important things in your life (Family & Home) then why is your cheap ass not already getting one?  Go ahead and use our home security systems review site,  to find out what company is going to best serve your needs, wants and budget.

3. Get a guard dogGet a Guard dog

Getting a guard dog or at least one that is going to make noise at a burglar is a better choice than getting a gun.  Why?  Because a dog will actually do something!  Your wife grabbing a gun may actually get turned against her if she doesn’t dare or know how to pull the trigger.  The dog is going to make noise and make the bad guy think twice before going in that door or window.  And if a burglar does decide to test out that back door; they will be in for a nice surprise when getting in!

Burglars have been known to get past big dogs fairly easy so it isn’t a one-and-done home security technique but it is a great start.  It will also give your spouse peace of mind knowing if anyone is tip toeing around outside the dog will hear it first.

Not only are you getting your man’s best buddy, but also a very useful animal for the protection of your family.

Conclusion

There you have it!  3 crucial tips to making sure your loved one feels safe while you may be away from home.  Yes, it may cost a little more money but that peace of mind is worth it and you will find yourself having a better relationship because of it.

We hope you liked these basic tips and please leave any ideas or feedback you may have below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use ADT security cameras to monitor without service?

Sadly, no. If you’ve purchased an ADT camera, then you’re required to also get one of their service plans. You will need to have an ADT monitoring plan and the Pulse application to use any ADT camera to its full functionality. Security services firms like ADT offer free installation on many devices, but the catch is that you will need to sign up for a service agreement. And yes, you will also need an internet connection to use ADT’s security cameras. You’ll also want to download Pulse, their proprietary application, to view and monitor everything on the camera through cloud services.

Do ADT security cameras record all the time?

Yes, ADT cameras are capable of recording footage all the time. However, you can configure them to only record when detecting movement. You also have the capability of allowing them to record to your hard drive or to the ADT servers directly.

Do I own my ADT equipment?

Yes, you do. However, once your contract expires, you won’t be able to use it as intended. ADT never takes back your purchased equipment if your subscription expires. This is because you’ve paid for the equipment itself already, even if the installation was free. It’s also a good marketing strategy because it will make its users come back eventually as to not feel as if they have wasted their money for nothing on said equipment.

Can you use ADT equipment without service?

You can use an ADT camera without monitoring but you will only be able to use it as a local non-monitored system, which practically defeats the purpose of having a security system installed in the first place. Without ADT service, there’s not much you can “self-monitor.” You can, theoretically, still save footage to your local hard drive, but there’s no guarantee with newer models.

Prices, History and how to use the Honeywell Total Connect Security System

Maybe you have bought a cool tech gadget before that looked amazing and then didn’t work as shown. Lots of toys like drones and RC cars fall into that category but should home security?  The total connect by Honeywell Security is a new all in one automation system to turn your home into a smart-house.  You can’t buy this system directly online like you can other Honeywell systems, you must find a dealer.

One of the major manufacturers of automation and security systems for homes and businesses worldwide is Honeywell. They offer technology for linked homes and businesses that provide safety against intruders, fire, and home automation, in addition to the most cutting-edge IP video and access control.

With the use of the app total connects, you may remotely activate and disarm the alarm in your home or business. Additionally, it will give you the freedom to manage the signal from any location without assistance from a service provider or someone else.

Here’s a glance at the good and the bad of a Honeywell Total Connect security system:

Pros

  • Great brand with a long track record of making security equipment
  • Used by millions of customers
  • Backup batteries
  • Used by large and small security companies and businesses
  • Smart-home optimized plus home automation integration

Cons

  • Not a security monitoring company
  • Doesn’t require expert monitoring services
  • If purchasing on your own, you have to install it by yourself
  • Installation is hard and requires HVAC certification
pricing costs

Time to pull out the wallet…

Pricing really depends on the dealer you buy the Total connect system through.  They will be the ones charging you a monthly monitoring fee and installation fee.  Because you cannot buy the Total Connect package online (only through a dealer) each dealer is going to offer different promotions and pricing.   Based on our other reviews, here is what you can expect as a norm.  Any higher than this and you should be suspicious.

Starting costs – This is a higher end system with full energy automation and video.  Expect a $99-199 installation or activation fee.

Packages – Make sure you get a good deal.  If it is a small local company they may be trying to rip you off.  You should get up to 4 window/door sensors, 1-2 motion sensors and 1-2 smart devices such as their camera or thermostat.  Anything else on top of that will most likely be out of pocket expenses.

Here is what one dealer is charging for monthly monitoring rates with the total connect plan:

gold and platinum honeywell connect plans

Honeywell History of Company

They’ve been around a long time…

Over 100 years of history in making products related to the home.

Founded in 1906 in Indiana.

You may have seen their brand on equipment all throughout your house.  Like General Electric, they aren’t a standalone security product producer.  That being said they are a very big name in home security and you can rely on the quality of their products.

You must purchase through dealers.  Just like manufactures of cars sell to the distributors who you buy a car from, Honeywell sells to authorized dealers who then install their system into your home.

Honeywell does not provide monitoring service of the any of their security systems including the Total Connect.  This will be taken care of through whoever you sign up with and pay a monthly company too.

Their name carries weight.  Over the years this has been a problem for dealers and Honeywell themselves.  Because they have such a powerful brand name, several security companies over the years have done door to door scams claiming to be with Honeywell when they are really only a dealer. Remember, Honeywell security will never knock on your door and try to you sell you an alarm system.

honeywell security equipment review

Honeywell Smart security products that will do it all for you…

The Honeywell Total Connect combines your home alarm system + thermostat + security camera’s to your smart phone.

These are the touchscreen panels that accompany the system. They along with security cameras need a direct power source.  Their other sensors and detectors are all wireless and can last up to 10 years on a single battery.  The sensors will also beep to let you know they need a new battery if and when the time comes.

Upgrading… Thousands of current residents have an older Honeywell system in their home.  When a tech comes out to install the Total Connect he may be able to use some of this equipment using a hardwired translator device.  This can save you money or you can put the savings towards a free camera.

Home Automation.  Most companies like Vivint or ADT Pulse have the lighting controls, smart locks, live streaming from camera’s and smart thermostats in place.  What the Total Connect can do what these smart security systems won’t is:

  • Operate the shades (window blinds) in your home.  This will cost you extra.
  • Control your ceiling fans.  If you’re just too lazy to get up and flick the switch, connect to your fan with Z-wave.
  • GPS zone settings.  This adds a level of convenience but talk to your dealer about setting this up first.
  • Create automated ‘scenes’.  Make a ‘goodnight scene’ (setting) on the app and just by pressing that everything you have setup will take place.  Example:  Push the button and blinds will close, alarm system lock, fan turn on and baby monitor camera stream audio.

How well does this all work?

It all sounds nice and futuristic but how practical is it?  Sadly, not much.  Depending on the size of your home, if it is a large one it can come in handy.  But for the average home under $250,000 you are better off using the standard app, turning on your own lights and not dealing with the hassle.  The fact that over 70% of home security customers (those who pay a monthly monitoring rate) don’t even arm their system as they leave each day because it is too much of a hassle tells us that people won’t use all of these features as much as they initially think they would.  If turning your system on and off from an app or key-fob is already too much of a hassle, this stuff will only clutter your to do list more.

theft protection device

Honeywell Theft detection device

This is something unique Honeywell.  You can stick this sensor in any high valued product and if it gets stolen actually track it down using their app!  Cons:  Can’t hide it on high valued items such as jewelry, guns, clothing and more.  Good for big items only.

total connect apps

The Total Connect App – Majority of companies pay to get a White-labeled version of Alarm.com’s app for their customers.  This app however is made by them and has some cool advanced features.  The video streaming works well and you can use it a baby monitor device to save some extra bucks.  Streaming it via 3g and 4g can get a little bumpy but if you have WIFI (most places now do) when you are viewing it you will be impressed.

With so many large and small home security dealers still pushing their keypad control panel and basic solution we hope to see more of them upgrade and start using this total connect system.  It has some great features and potential.  It is still in the infant and testing stage so you may want to hold off until their price comes down and bug fixes to their app have been fixed.

Although, Honeywell alone is one of the most trusted brands. So, you do not have to worry if you choose them. All you have to do is to choose a great dealers who can install you system.

Hope you liked our review on this and please add any feedback or experience you have had with this product below.

New and Improved: Resideo Total Connect 2.0

  • Push notification

How to Keep an Watchful Eye on the Home with Security Smartphone Apps

Looking for the best home security apps?  We have tested dozens and ranked them according to:

  • Ease of use
  • Lack of glitches & bugs
  • Functionality
  • Availability (iOS / Android / any smart device)
  • Cost

After compiling our reviews, the following are all companies that provides apps you can rely on to monitor your security system in your home or in your business.

Two categories – Self made or third party

alarm-com-app

Creating a functional apps costs thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Because of this, most ma and pa security shops (along with some big companies) use Alarm.com’s whitelabel app.  They pay a monthly fee based on the number of users, and their users see it as ‘Brand X’ security app.  The good news is, this isn’t a bad thing.  What companies using this lack in customization they make up for in reliability.  Alarm.com app is a extremely reliable security app that connects to dozens of control panels, sensors and z-wave products.  The majority of all companies use Alarm.com except for the two giants, ADT and Vivint.

Home Security App Smart Tips

  • When streaming live views from security cameras, be on a wifi network if possible.  Live stream will eat up your cell phone data.
  • Don’t give everyone you know a user account.  Limit who has access to the app.
  • Lock your smart phone.  This gives one extra measure of security.

With those in mind and our rating criteria, here are the 3 best mobile home security apps.

#1 – ADT Pulse Home Security Apps

adt-pulse-app

iOS app   |    Android App   |  ADT Pulse Review   |  Visit website

ADT’s proprietary app was the smoothest and user friendliest one we tested.  Whether controlling a simple security system ON & OFF or security cameras on an advanced automation system, it can handle any project it is put up against.

Pros

  • User functionality 4.8 of 5
  • Clean display
  • High app ratings
  • Voice recognition
  • Cameras, automation available
  • Other information regarding users area
  • Manage users easily
  • Apple Watch Integration
  • Connects with Nest thermostat
  • Connects with Ring doorbell cameras

Cons

  • Can be slow to respond

  • Voice control is only available with certain package

Great all around security app that can connect to existing Honeywell and GE security systems.   App is free with monitoring plans above $40.

#2 – Vivint Sky Home Security Apps

vivint-smarthome-app-on-phone

iOS app  |  Android app  |  Vivint security review  |  Visit Site

The Vivint app is also self-made by the company themselves which gives them lots of capabilities companies below with Alarm.com will not have.  The app is quick to load, gives notifications instantly when any sensors are triggered.  The live dashboard feed of security cameras loads quickly and updates with pictures taken every 5 minutes with security cameras (then if something like a unknown car or person is seen on a picture, users can click on that and load the live feed).  Going back in time on security cameras is easy drag and drop.

Pros

  • User functionality 4.7 of 5
  • Add / remove users easily (going out of town?  Have a relative download the app and add them as a user).
  • Full smart home integration
  • Connect to smart thermostat
  • Smooth control
  • Continual updates
  • Different amounts of notifications users can opt in or out of
  • 14,000 5 star reviews
  • Great customer support
  • Control door locks
  • Garage awareness

Cons

  • Must have Vivint monitoring service
  • It requires an update in video storage
  • Notifications can get overwhelming, set limits

The Vivint sky app comes free on any smart device (phone or tablet) on packages over $40/mo.  Once users terminate monitoring account their login to the app will be limited as well.  Costs vary depending on the type of security system one wants, anywhere from $40-80 a month. Additionally, it will cost you $129 if you wish to relocate the system.

#3 – Protect America Mobile Home Security Control Apps

Protect America App

iOS app  |  Android app  |  Protect America review  |  Visit site

The Protect America app is very simple and to the point.  It is Z-wave product compatible so don’t be deceived by its simplicity.  It can still manage and view cameras, automation and even GPS tracking.  The dashboard has nothing to be envious of but it gets the job done.  It is also the most cost efficient option available.  Most of Protect America’s equipment is GE and they still use a keypad (simonXT) panel which integrates with this.

Pros

  • Easy to setup user account and connect to security system
  • Simple in design and nature
  • Uses Alarm.com reliable software
  • Lowest price monitoring
  • Live support
  • Free on all security plans $34 and above

Cons

  • Several 3 star reviews
  • Must be an active customer
  • Not the ‘coolest’ app available

For users that want a reliable mobile security app for a low cost while not losing functionality then this is their choice.  Protect America has been around since 1992 and is a DIY security system.  For users who use this, most of the time it will be for the simple arm and disarming of the alarm.  Save walking to the panel to type in a code, just pull out a phone at night and use this.

If interested in Protect America’s security app, the following also use the same third party app to control their security systems:

Frontpoint

Monitronics

Protection One

LiveWatch

If interested in other proprietary apps and the top 2 ranked here don’t seem like a fit, they include:

Xfinity security

–  SpotCrime, how to locate local criminal activity.

SimpliSafe

What You Should Look For When Choosing a Home Security Apps

In case you are not satisfied with the above offerings and want to see for yourself what the market has to offer, here’s a basic list of what you should be checking out.

An intuitive control panel

The way you control your security system can ultimately make or break the entire setup. Keep in mind that the control panel connects all of your security devices, allows you to arm and disarm your system, and do so much more, so don’t cheap out on this component.

Door and window sensors

Having such sensors is essential, especially if you live on the ground floor or if your building is structured in such a way that a burglar could easily climb up and break through your windows.

Motion detectors

It should be pretty obvious why having motion sensors is a good idea, especially in the rooms where you’re not expecting anybody to go at night, and especially at your entrance or front porch.

Doorbell camera

Instead of having a classic visor (through which burglars can also look), it’s a better idea to have a doorbell camera so that only you can see who’s at your door. Keep in mind that we also recommend having a backup generator for this feature in case the power ever goes out.

Audio sensor for glass

In case the motion sensors and window sensors don’t get triggered, the glass-breaking ones surely do. These sensors listen out for high decibel levels to detect if any windows or glass items are shattered. Once they detect these uncanny happenings, they’ll sound the alarm.

Panic button

If all else fails, then a panic button should always be the ace up your sleeve. Having this feature will allow you to alert the cops or the security firm with the press of a single button. Smooth and simple.

Interface User-friendly

A user-friendly is important for users. It should have ans easy features that all ages can understand and navigate through in an effective way.
