What happens when the two largest home security companies collide?

We stacked up these two security giants dozens of ways for you to decide who the right company is for you and your home.  Ultimately what you are deciding between is a: good vs rocky history, good vs luxury price and basic vs advanced.  These are the two largest home security companies in North America with different sets of standards. It is the Vivint vs ADT security system.

Of all the home security providers in the US, the ADT Security System has set its standard as the oldest and most experience. In business for more than 150 years, they have a solid reputation and great customer service. However, even if Vivint was founded only in 1999. They also set their standards with their smart home integration and month-to-month contracts.

By the end of this comparison we want to know whose crime deterrent sign you will be putting out in your front yard…  The orange circle or the blue octagon?

**Update to Vivint** They have now changed to a Leasing fee option for equipment as of Feb 13, 2017.  This means there are no more ‘set plans’ and that users can choose to pay upfront for their security equipment (and avoid their long 5 year contracts for monitoring) or lease-to-own the cost of the equipment into the contract.  With this update, it means anyone who qualifies (600+ credit score) can get setup with a ‘no money down’ home automation security system.  This also means their promotion of $1500 Free equipment doesn’t exist as customers have to pay for the equipment.

Vivint vs ADT Monitoring Stations

ADT dots the nation with 5 corporate calling stations and dozens of monitoring stations.  Each one of these buildings are built to withstand tornadoes, earthquakes and other natural disasters.  If one of their primary monitoring locations were to go down, the calls going to that station automatically re-route to another one so you have true 24/7 monitoring service.

Vivint on the other hand has one primary monitoring station in Provo, UT.  Other recent locations include Seattle, WA.  Many saw Vivint’s CEO Todd Pederson on the TV show ‘Undercover Boss’.  He talked about opening a new monitoring location in the show as well as improving other aspects of the company.  Vivint may hire other phone centers to do after hours support and take calls for their customers but nowhere near the amount of national stations or backup structure that ADT does.

Vivint vs ADT Trial Period

We frequently conduct free trials to determine a security system’s quality and level of service. The Adt provides an incredible 6-month money-back guarantee. However, the terms and conditions of the Residential Security plan are unclear, and there are no clear details regarding the limitations and particular parameters of the said trial. While on the other hand, Vivint provides their customers with a 3-day trial period, after which they have 30 days to return the equipment if they decide to terminate their contract.

Vivint vs ADT Installation

While both Vivint and ADT provide the ease of professional installation that ranges from $99-$150, ADT also offers a DIY installation option, making it easier for the client to determine which options are suitable for them.

Alarm Reviews verdict

If you want a better all-around service, price and reputation, then choose ADT.  Your initial term is going to be shorter (36 vs 50 months) and easier to move if the need arises.  If you want the best of the best of the best and don’t mind the higher prices with worse customer ratings then choose Vivint.  Another reason to go with Vivint is if you have an existing ADT system and you want to upgrade.

Ultimately it is your choice, both are great companies and are industry leaders in the US.  Let us know what you think below!

History recap of Guardian Protection

Way back when…

Guardian has been around for a long time.  Founded in 1950 they have continued to adapt their features and now offer life safety, home automation and security cameras along with the standard security system.  While companies like ADT home security and LifeShield have been bought out multiple times, Guardian has grown steadily over the years without ever being acquired.  This means you still get the very personal attention from customer service that you may not get in a large corporate company.

Their primary monitoring station is in Pennsylvania where it is staffed 24/7.  They have extended customer support hours from 7 am to midnight daily.  They continue to offer professional installation which is highly recommended whereas many new home security systems are self-install only.  If you get installed by a dealer you can also rest assured that they are licensed professionals and have gone through all the business procedures in order to partner with Guardian.

Alarm Reviews verdict

This one is up to you.  We have read through several negative and positive customer reviews about them.  The contract termination fee is 20% which you will want to consider if moving and signing their long 5 year contract.  There isn’t anything special or mind-blowing with them but they are a reputable company.  If you want to get above average then we suggest you compare them to others.

Need-to-Know’s before buying their Security System

XFINITY Home Security (from Comcast) has added home security to their bag of tricks to offer to their current customer base.  You have to have other services of theirs to consider going using this business as a home security provider.  We tested XFINITY Home’s new security system versus the top companies in the industry and compiled the data in this report.

Will you be putting an Xfinity Security sign in front of your residence?

A look into the Good and the Bad of XFINITY Home:

Pros:

  • TV, security and internet all in one bill.
  • Same company to deal with customer support.
  • Can service most locations in the USA.
  • Good starting prices, can save $200+ versus other companies in the first year.
  • Proprietary equipment with standard touchscreen panel.
  • Certified technicians; but can’t always guarantee a smooth installation.
  • Not the absolute worst.  They win against rival AT&T Digital Life and COX, two other cable companies that added home security.
  • Using their security camera, you can deliver intelligent notifications and reduce false alarms by detecting people, cars, and pets.
  • Real-time text and email alerts
  • 24/7 security monitoring
  • Xfinity mobile app
  • Professional monitoring services starts at $30 to $40 a month
  • No term contracts

Cons:

  • Hard to cancel or switch when combined with other services.
  • High cancellation fee if terminating contract early
  • Price may fluctuate after promotion expires.  What looks good now may hurt the wallet later.
  • Relocation fee.  When moving, users may be faced with a relocation fee or a cancellation charge to get out of contract.  Other companies such as Protect America allow you to move at no cost.
  • You will deal with a lot of automated customer service.
  • Worst rated customer service.
  • Worst rated professional installation
  • Short history in the home security space.  Average years of history of companies reviewed here is 20+ years.
  • Professional installation is required
  • No voice assistant integration

XFINITY Secure 300 & 350 System Prices

Higher starting costs with average monitoring monthly fees

Prices vary depending on if you plan to bundle with other Comcast services.  The ‘Secure 350’ system they offer starts at $50 a month, which means that after 6-12 months prices could go up as well.  The Secure 350 package is needed for larger homes and those wanting home automation.  There are several better deals available at that price.  The 300 package is more basic and affordable, a better option for the average consumer.

Regardless of what package you choose expect to pay $99 installation fee and a possible $99 activation fee.  Monitoring costs will be between $40-60 depending on their current promotions.  Just remember that after 6-12 months your monthly price will most likely go up.

Updated packages 2023

They now have 3 classification packages that you can choose from:

Is XFINITY security system equipment any good?

A look at the user interface of their iOS app

3 star overall rating from 5147 reviews

Smart phone apps and home automation equipment…

Most of the equipment is wireless.  The control panel, cameras, and smart thermostats will require connecting to a power source and possible drilling holes in the wall to connect wiring.  The security camera they offer is not a pan-tilt camera.  Meaning, users cannot turn it right and left using a smartphone.  Their door sensors and motion sensors have a small red light indicator that will light up if triggered.  The control panel is a touchscreen and functions much like a tablet.  Motion detectors, door and window sensors along with their unique touchscreen control panel (compare it to Vivint sky here).  Must pay out-of-pocket for most advanced equipment (cameras, smart thermostat).

Smart home automation integration:  If you’re looking for companies who can match or do better than Xfinity Home’s automation equipment, check out Frontpoint Security who has a great alarm system at an affordable rate.

What it takes to get their security system up and going

Set a date and the van will show up — not a DIY installation

Don’t count on them being on time…

Schedule: They will set up a 2-hour time frame for installation.

Installation:  This is where they get a lot of bad reputation. Anything from broken door frames to faulty sensors has been reported. Now that they have a few years under their feet things should improve on this end but expect delays or mistakes from the technician.

All Set: All equipment is wireless unless you paid extra for some hard-wired home automation equipment.  The tech will teach you how to use the security system, set up a verbal password, and show you how to control it with your smartphone. Make sure you are present when the technician has completed the job so you can see how to run the alarm system.

The touchscreen controller was the only component of the system we purchased that could be installed by you. But since all of our other parts required professional installation, we chose to leave everything in the hands of the experts to simplify your life. The expert came and installed everything for us while we sat back and relaxed, testing each component along the way. However, even though we paid a little over $100 for installation, the cost will vary depending on your equipment and where you live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is XFINITY’s customer service available 24 hours, 7 days a week on the clock?

Yes, the customer support department at Xfinity can be contacted from anywhere in the world 24/7. They also offer support forums, a helpful community on Twitter, a subreddit, and the option to contact them on Facebook Messenger if you prefer to do it that way.

What is XFINITY’s phone number?

1-800-XFINITY – as stated on their website. In layman’s terms, the number translates as 1-800-934-6489.

How do I get through to a real person when contacting XFINITY?

The best way to reach an actual XFINITY agent is to call them through the 1-800-934-6489 number that we’ve already listed above. A bot will answer your call, but once it asks you for your query, all you need to do is say “technical support” or “customer service” for the system prompts. From there, you’ll be taken to a waiting cue and you can sit back while you get connected to an actual human.

Otherwise, if you think that the cur is taking too long, you have an alternative option. Get on a live chat with a customer service agent via the XFINITY contact page. From there, you’ll quickly be able to get to the option of contacting a real person.

How do I skip through those annoying menus when dialing the XFINITY phone number?

The process is pretty similar for both iOS and Android. After you enter the general 10-digit number for the call, hold the “*” button on the onscreen keypad. A comma will show up after a second or two. Now, enter the extension of your party. The phone will call your contact, “pausing” for two seconds where you put the comma, and then dialing the extension.

You can do the same thing for a contact’s work number in your address book, too. Enter the number, hold the “+*#” button on the lower left, and choose “Pause” to enter a comma in the number.

Our Comcast Security Conclusion

While they are still getting their business in order, we suggest using a different company.  There are more negative customer reviews in the section below than any other of the 50+ security systems we have reviewed.  While they have good equipment they lack in too many other areas to be a top contender.

How their Home Security System Control App Works

First of all, Alarm.com is NOT a home security company.  They are a white label mobile app service FOR home security companies.  This provides the service to turn on and off the alarm system, not monitor it.  Founded in 2000 they were later acquired in 2009 for $27 million by ABS.  They are a ‘turnkey’ solution, great for startup security companies who can’t integrate their own app control with existing security equipment.  Dozens of companies use them with their personal business logo on it.  You may not even know you are using the Alarm.com app!  Before digging deeper into how it works, what you can control lets take a look at the good and bad of Alarm.com.

Pros

  • Complete control of home alarm system
  • View live data feed of security cameras
  • White label service
  • Reliable app
  • Smart automation services
  • Suitable for a variety of security systems
  • Wireless Technology
  • Home automation and property access
  • It works with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, IFTTT, Apple TV, Apple Watch and Fire TV
  • Integrates with Honeywell or GE security systems
  • Collaboration with large numbers of service providers
  • BBB since 2005 with an A+ rating and an accredited business

Cons

  • Does not provide security monitoring services
  • If the app goes down or glitches, thousands of users of different companies are effected
  • Not as clean in design compared to the ADT pulse app
  • General Pricing Model
  • Poor customer service

Well-known security companies that use the Alarm.com service include:  Protect America, Frontpoint, Protection One and nearly every small ma n pa alarm company out there.

In terms of home automation and security, Alarm.com is a market leader. Alarm.com is fundamentally a technological platform. Home security systems, mobile apps, TV streaming, and wristwatch apps are just a few of its many different product offerings.

The business is dedicated to improving the relationship between its clients and their homes. For both home and commercial consumers, Alarm.com provides security solutions.

prices

How does Alarm.com make their money?

Each company or dealer that uses their app as a white label service for their customers to be able to control their alarm system pays a monthly price.  Depending on the use, it can range into the thousands of dollars.  It is a great app and that’s why companies tend to use it over building one for their own.  It also works flawlessly with GE and Honeywell equipment making it ideal for 99% of security systems available in the market.

Alarm.com is the symbol of security when it comes to home safety.  Available for download on the Android and Apple app stores, home security control is just an arm’s length away.  Alarm.com has gone a step beyond the traditional security systems with their android app. The app is extremely user friendly and has been designed in such a way as to make the navigation easier for the user.

As a consumer you don’t have to worry about this.  Most home security companies include free smartphone control.

Don’t let the power get to your head…

The user-friendly interface allows you to keep an eye out for what is happening around and on the premises of your property (if you ordered a security camera with your security system). You can view who enters or leaves your property, rooms etc. A complete check on the movements within your property is possible with this mobile app. One of the best features of this app is the simplicity of turning the alarm on and off (big green unlock and red lock symbols). This feature allows you to be in an instant touch with the security system with just a single tap, from any location at any time. It saves you a lot of time from typing your code by hand and is convenient for when you have your hands full (with groceries for example) and need to disarm it before coming in the home.

Here is a screenshot of what the energy management control looks like on a smart phone:

Here are more features that you can integrate:

Alarm.com features

Remote Monitoring

Alarm.com smarthome technology display

Alarm.com allows you to watch live video feed from the security cams installed on your property and monitor every corner without any hassle. It also lets you watch stored video clips that were recorded earlier and to look out for any unusual activity.

You can watch any specific event happening at your property too, even if the event or the activity you want to view is couple of days old. You also get a notification when a video is recorded in any corner of your property. The app is designed to allow you easy access to your home and its systems remotely, which is one of the main ideas behind smart living. With this app, you can tap into your home heating system and remotely set the thermostat to a specific temperature. This feature comes quite handy when you are just 10 minutes away from home and can turn on the heating system for a warm welcome.  As of 2015, this is the latest craze in Home automation to control your thermostat and you can save big bugs on your energy bill.

Lightbulb with circle around it Lighting Control

And then there was light…

Although this doesn’t fall into the ‘security’ realm of your system, more and more companies are offering it as an up-sell (higher monthly rate) feature.  If your company offers it, then Alarm.com can control it.  You can brighten or dim the lights of your property at will from distance. This feature particularly proves to be useful when you are moments away from reaching home and can turn on the lights. It can save you money as well as cut down the energy expenditure. Using the same principle, you can remotely control the locking system of your property. You can lock or unlock the doors and windows as per your needs without having to be physically present on the property.

Phone Vibrating Notifications

Buzz-buzz!

With this smart phone android app, the history of your security system is at your disposal for perusal. You can check the complete log of system and alarm events by all the users with this app. For example, you can see what time doors opened, when an alarm went off, what user turned the alarm on and off and more.  The app also allows you to adjust the settings to receive notifications about any of the systems at your home or workplace right on your mobile phone. Whenever anyone uses, activates or deactivates that particular system, you’ll receive a notification about it on your cell phone.  This provides a safe way to allow other users like a baby sitter or sibling to have access to your alarm system remotely when entering your home when you are away.

Malfunctioning errors and the updates they have done

Their android platform has proved to be quite a valuable tool for users along with some hiccups on the way.  Users can get to updates when:

  • Your kids reach home
  • Someone arrives or leave the premises of their property
  • Any unusual activity occurs on your property like water leaking through the pipes
  • When any of the corners are left unguarded like the garage or pool door being left open
  • Someone forgets to turn off the lights for longer time duration’s.
  • The most important notification-whenever someone turns off the alarm system- can also be received spontaneously with this android app. It also notifies you about the exact person who disables the alarm system.
  • Finally, if someone approaches sensitive area of home like the medicine cabinet, liquor cabinet or the guns’ storage area.

These notifications can be enabled for getting texts as well as for emails or phone calls or push notifications. With this app, you can also set specific user codes for different family members for instant notification when someone sets foot on or leaves your property. These codes can be changed at any time round the clock.

Throw Away your Keys and Grab your Phone

Alarm.com has eliminated the need for having keys to access your home and offices.  This instant alert system has the immense benefit of helping you act quickly in case of any emergencies, for example, if a fire erupts on the property, you can immediately notify the concerned authorities while reaching the spot quickly.

Our Conclusion

Alarm.com app is available on the android apps stores for instant download and can be easily installed in any kind of android smartphone. It is compatible with all android devices with OS 1.6 or later. This app keeps you in close connection with your property while you are away without having to worry about its safety because mobile.com is the extra pair of eyes that you need for 24/7 monitoring and security of your home or office.  Please note that not all features Alarm.com offers may be available for you depending on what equipment your security company offers.

Utilizing a smart device or control panel, you can manage your entire house thanks to its cutting-edge technology. To provide you peace of mind and complete control over your home, you can configure the notifications that are sent to you. The company gives customers the advantages of a big business with the personal touch of a small dealer thanks to its nationwide network of authorized partners.

Prices, History and how to use the Honeywell Total Connect Security System

Maybe you have bought a cool tech gadget before that looked amazing and then didn’t work as shown. Lots of toys like drones and RC cars fall into that category but should home security?  The total connect by Honeywell Security is a new all in one automation system to turn your home into a smart-house.  You can’t buy this system directly online like you can other Honeywell systems, you must find a dealer.

One of the major manufacturers of automation and security systems for homes and businesses worldwide is Honeywell. They offer technology for linked homes and businesses that provide safety against intruders, fire, and home automation, in addition to the most cutting-edge IP video and access control.

With the use of the app total connects, you may remotely activate and disarm the alarm in your home or business. Additionally, it will give you the freedom to manage the signal from any location without assistance from a service provider or someone else.

Here’s a glance at the good and the bad of a Honeywell Total Connect security system:

Pros

  • Great brand with a long track record of making security equipment
  • Used by millions of customers
  • Backup batteries
  • Used by large and small security companies and businesses
  • Smart-home optimized plus home automation integration

Cons

  • Not a security monitoring company
  • Doesn’t require expert monitoring services
  • If purchasing on your own, you have to install it by yourself
  • Installation is hard and requires HVAC certification
pricing costs

Time to pull out the wallet…

Pricing really depends on the dealer you buy the Total connect system through.  They will be the ones charging you a monthly monitoring fee and installation fee.  Because you cannot buy the Total Connect package online (only through a dealer) each dealer is going to offer different promotions and pricing.   Based on our other reviews, here is what you can expect as a norm.  Any higher than this and you should be suspicious.

Starting costs – This is a higher end system with full energy automation and video.  Expect a $99-199 installation or activation fee.

Packages – Make sure you get a good deal.  If it is a small local company they may be trying to rip you off.  You should get up to 4 window/door sensors, 1-2 motion sensors and 1-2 smart devices such as their camera or thermostat.  Anything else on top of that will most likely be out of pocket expenses.

Here is what one dealer is charging for monthly monitoring rates with the total connect plan:

gold and platinum honeywell connect plans

Honeywell History of Company

They’ve been around a long time…

Over 100 years of history in making products related to the home.

Founded in 1906 in Indiana.

You may have seen their brand on equipment all throughout your house.  Like General Electric, they aren’t a standalone security product producer.  That being said they are a very big name in home security and you can rely on the quality of their products.

You must purchase through dealers.  Just like manufactures of cars sell to the distributors who you buy a car from, Honeywell sells to authorized dealers who then install their system into your home.

Honeywell does not provide monitoring service of the any of their security systems including the Total Connect.  This will be taken care of through whoever you sign up with and pay a monthly company too.

Their name carries weight.  Over the years this has been a problem for dealers and Honeywell themselves.  Because they have such a powerful brand name, several security companies over the years have done door to door scams claiming to be with Honeywell when they are really only a dealer. Remember, Honeywell security will never knock on your door and try to you sell you an alarm system.

Honeywell Smart security products that will do it all for you…

The Honeywell Total Connect combines your home alarm system + thermostat + security camera’s to your smart phone.

These are the touchscreen panels that accompany the system. They along with security cameras need a direct power source.  Their other sensors and detectors are all wireless and can last up to 10 years on a single battery.  The sensors will also beep to let you know they need a new battery if and when the time comes.

Upgrading… Thousands of current residents have an older Honeywell system in their home.  When a tech comes out to install the Total Connect he may be able to use some of this equipment using a hardwired translator device.  This can save you money or you can put the savings towards a free camera.

Home Automation.  Most companies like Vivint or ADT Pulse have the lighting controls, smart locks, live streaming from camera’s and smart thermostats in place.  What the Total Connect can do what these smart security systems won’t is:

  • Operate the shades (window blinds) in your home.  This will cost you extra.
  • Control your ceiling fans.  If you’re just too lazy to get up and flick the switch, connect to your fan with Z-wave.
  • GPS zone settings.  This adds a level of convenience but talk to your dealer about setting this up first.
  • Create automated ‘scenes’.  Make a ‘goodnight scene’ (setting) on the app and just by pressing that everything you have setup will take place.  Example:  Push the button and blinds will close, alarm system lock, fan turn on and baby monitor camera stream audio.

How well does this all work?

It all sounds nice and futuristic but how practical is it?  Sadly, not much.  Depending on the size of your home, if it is a large one it can come in handy.  But for the average home under $250,000 you are better off using the standard app, turning on your own lights and not dealing with the hassle.  The fact that over 70% of home security customers (those who pay a monthly monitoring rate) don’t even arm their system as they leave each day because it is too much of a hassle tells us that people won’t use all of these features as much as they initially think they would.  If turning your system on and off from an app or key-fob is already too much of a hassle, this stuff will only clutter your to do list more.

theft protection device

Honeywell Theft detection device

This is something unique Honeywell.  You can stick this sensor in any high valued product and if it gets stolen actually track it down using their app!  Cons:  Can’t hide it on high valued items such as jewelry, guns, clothing and more.  Good for big items only.

total connect apps

The Total Connect App – Majority of companies pay to get a White-labeled version of Alarm.com’s app for their customers.  This app however is made by them and has some cool advanced features.  The video streaming works well and you can use it a baby monitor device to save some extra bucks.  Streaming it via 3g and 4g can get a little bumpy but if you have WIFI (most places now do) when you are viewing it you will be impressed.

You can download the app for free here.

Our Honeywell final verdict

With so many large and small home security dealers still pushing their keypad control panel and basic solution we hope to see more of them upgrade and start using this total connect system.  It has some great features and potential.  It is still in the infant and testing stage so you may want to hold off until their price comes down and bug fixes to their app have been fixed.

Although, Honeywell alone is one of the most trusted brands. So, you do not have to worry if you choose them. All you have to do is to choose a great dealers who can install you system.

Hope you liked our review on this and please add any feedback or experience you have had with this product below.

  • Smart scenes
  • Push notification
  • Geofencing

Are the DSC Security Products any Good?

Let’s talk about a key player in the security alarm industry, DSC (Digital Security Controls). DSC security isn’t exactly your regular home alarm system provider. They are more recognized as innovative manufacturers of home security systems ranging from revolutionary control panels to IP alarm monitoring products and self-contained wireless panels.

DSC has always been a pioneer in the security business, from our ground-breaking control panels to our market-leading IP alarm monitoring systems to our slick, modern self-contained wireless panels today.

A quick search on DSC would show a delayed version of cutting edge innovation on what an alarm system should provide.  This review would show a breakdown of some of the systems DSC offers.

Here is a brief overlook of the pros and cons of DSC Alarm:

Pros

  • Rich history of providing security products
  • Affordable
  • Good for dealers
  • You can have Honeywell and other companies take over your DSC System

Currently, DSC is being run by Tyro international, one of the largest security portfolios in the world.

  • Wireless Home Security
  • Wired Home Security
  • TouchScreen Security Keypad

Identifying a DSC Alarm Panel

dsc-alarm-kit

A typical DSC alarm panel comprises of a DSC control panel, one or more keypads and various sensors and detectors.  Most people switch their outdated looking equipment out with a new Honeywell DSC system.

Some alarm systems have two names, the Model Number, and the Marketing Name. For example, the PC5010 (Model Number) is also known and the Power 832 (Marketing Name) which is usually found on the control panel.

While researching for a DSC alarm system, be sure to check for the specific model number as each system differs to a great extent from each other.

Just like their PowerSeries Control Panel. It has 3 different types which is the PC1616, PC1832, and the PC1864.

Take a look at the various user guides that are available on the DSC website. Simply search and contact their customer support if you have any complaint.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop my DSC alarm from beeping?

  • Go to any keypad and make sure the system is disarmed. If not, enter your disarm code as usual.
  • Press the “#” key. This will silence your DSC alarm system keypads.

Sadly, if you want to eliminate the underlying issue, you’ll have to consult the user manual, as DSC has changed a lot of its approaches over the years when it comes to troubleshooting problems.

What is the default master code for a DSC alarm?

By default, every DSC alarm should come with the classic 1234 master code. If that doesn’t work, try contacting support or resetting the alarm yourself by following the instructions in the user manual.

What Steps Must Be Taken To Clear An Alarm Fault Code?

To erase a fault code from your DSC system, type your master code twice, press the reset button once, and then enter [*][72]. Then, to prevent a false alarm, identify the issue code that triggered the alarm when it goes off.

Final Thoughts

The DSC alarm systems might have had their ups and downs throughout the years, but their newer offerings seem to be doing quite well. Feel free to browse the rest of our website and come to your own conclusion, or go ahead and buy something from DSC if you think that the price and value that it brings are worth it for your needs and budget.
