Knock, Knock! No, not a joke this time.. sorry. If you are reviewing AMP Security (now called ‘AMP Smart’) it is most likely because a sales rep knocked on your door. Like Vivint, Security Networks and Protection One; they are a company located in Utah that offers high commission sales to men and women over 18 who are willing to sell their security system.

AMP Security Headquarters in American Fork, UT Shown (Previously in Orem)

Pros

Cons

We’ll discuss their door to door sales tactics and if it’s a scam below.

Founded in early 2000’s with headquarters in Lehi, UT.

They are a home security authorized dealer for Guardian security. What does this mean? They up-sell you the contract value and Guardian does the monitoring service. AMP will supply the installation to one of their techs using Honeywell equipment. So lets say Guardian charges $39.99 a month, AMP will sell that 60 month contract (Beware!) to you for $47.99 a month and make the additional $8/month when selling your contract to them. This is how most dealerships work in home security. It gives them a chance to focus on marketing and producing sales and not worrying about the back-end of monitoring your account.

They have 550+ employees (lots of turn over each year, common in the door to door industry), most of whom are 1099 contracted employees that work 4-5 months out of the year selling door to door or installing security systems. According to Inc 5000 they did $24.8 M in revenue in 2012 and continue to grow year after year. They now primarily advertise the smart home features and not solely security as Vivint has also done.

They will install Honeywell security equipment which is a great brand. They carry pretty standard packages and products with nothing to ‘oohh’ and ‘awwwe’ over like ADT Pulse has. The system is wireless, you can get all the primary sensors but we do not recommend doing home automation with them. Why not? Because their technicians are taught a crash course on how to install home security systems in a period of 2-3 weeks before going out for the summer. Also, the tech only gets paid per install (around $100-150) so the faster they go the more installs they get and the more they will get paid. Meaning, they will crank it out and not do a great job.

Here is a screenshot of the equipment shown available on their site as of January 2016. They have newer equipment including touchscreen panel and smart home features (smart doorbells, thermostat control etc.)
